Why Create Defined Walkways?

In warehouses and industrial environments, pedestrians and vehicles often operate in close proximity. Without suitable control measures, this creates a significant risk of collision or injury.

Pedestrian barriers and gates help create defined routes, improve visibility, reduce unauthorised crossing points and provide clearer physical separation between operatives and MHE.

These systems can be used internally or externally and are particularly useful in:

  • Warehouse walkways.
  • Loading and dispatch areas.
  • Yard and external traffic routes.
  • Access routes to offices, welfare areas and pick zones.
  • Crossings, entrances and transition points.
  • Areas adjacent to block-stacked goods.

HSG76 Guidance on Pedestrian Safety and Block Stacking

Guidance within HSG76 – Warehousing and storage: A guide to health and safety supports the need for suitable pedestrian segregation, clearly defined walkways and protection in storage and handling areas.

Pedestrian and vehicle routes should be separated

Refer to HSG76 paragraphs 501–503. These paragraphs state that every workplace should be organised so that pedestrians and vehicles can circulate safely, and where they share a route there should be adequate separation. HSG76 says complete separation should be the first consideration, and where routes run close together, physical barriers should be used where reasonably practicable.

Pedestrian routes should be defined and clearly marked

Refer to HSG76 paragraph 405. This guidance says pedestrian activities should be separated from truck operating areas where reasonably practicable, and pedestrian routes and crossing places should be defined, designated and clearly marked.

Use separate walkways where provided

Refer to HSG76 paragraph 408. This guidance explains that, where employees work in conjunction with trucks, they should use separate walkways where these are provided and safe systems of work should be followed.

Guard rails should be considered to protect pedestrian routes

Refer to HSG76 paragraph 600. In storage and handling areas, HSG76 says layouts should be carefully considered and specifically notes that guard rails should be considered to protect pedestrian routes.

Block stacking should be stable and safely managed

Refer to HSG76 paragraphs 614–616. These paragraphs explain that unsuitable palletised loads should not be block stacked, stacks should be built on a firm and level base, stack height and stability should be controlled, adequate clearance should be maintained between rows, and stacks should be checked periodically for stability. This supports the use of appropriate topple barriers or protective separation where pedestrian routes run adjacent to block-stacked goods.

This page is intended as practical guidance only. The most appropriate pedestrian barrier arrangement should always be based on the site layout, vehicle movements, pedestrian traffic and risk assessment.

Choosing the Right Barrier System

The most suitable pedestrian barrier or gate system depends on the layout, level of vehicle interaction, available space and whether the area is internal or external.

When recommending a solution, we consider:

  • The type and frequency of MHE movement.
  • Whether pedestrians and vehicles run side-by-side or cross each other.
  • Whether access through the barrier line is required.
  • Whether the location is internal, external or both.
  • The visibility and appearance required.
  • Whether a rigid or impact-absorbing system is most appropriate.
  • Whether protection is also needed alongside block-stacked goods.

Some customers may prefer a straightforward steel system such as Armco or box section barrier, while others may want a more premium polymer barrier or integrated gate arrangement.
